Sustainable Global Culture

Common Ground: finding our way back to the enlightenment; Thomas de Zengotita, Harpers, Jan 2003 (Jack; just finished reading this piece and it is excellent and truly thought provoking -- well worth the time to read and ponder -- Dann)

The Preservation Institute: I haven't looked at this site in great detail but from what I have seen there are many interesting resources here; focused on selective modernization and a move beyond simplistic political dichotomies. (Dann)

Quantum Connections: Website for an organization that seeks to create Global Partnerships between people in the Developed World and the Developing World. (Larry)

Toddler Food Partners: Newly created website (and still growing) for a Minnesota non-profit that works to make nutritious food supplements for malnourished children in third world countries. (Larry)

Project Minnesota/LeonA people-to-people sister state organization facilitating mutually beneficial relationships and solidarity between the people of Minnesota and León, Nicaragua.  In pursuit of this mission, we support small scale, local initiatives for community development in León and provide opportunities for educational and cultural exchange.  (Jack)

The Polarised World Of Globalisation:  World politics and globalization are, at best, pretty hard to get a handle on.  The vast majority of American media outlets tout the benefits and wonders of ‘free trade’.   One must hunt for articulate opposition views, but here is one I recommend.  Directly taking on Tom Friedman’s Flat Earth hypothesis, Vandana Shiva makes a cogent argument and explains what is at stake:  true democracy and freedom.   Don’t expect an easy read!  (Jack 6/2005)

Political Commentary

City Pages interview:  Gore Vidal, March 2005.  In this interesting and informed interview Vidal calls it as he sees it.  If you are really a patriot, read this and believe.  (Jack)

Just for the fun of it...

The Meatrix: entertaining flash animation on the dangers of factory farming (Dann)
Beer is good for you: another well-done animation offers a warning for beer drinkers (Dann)
Arseiam: a neat site with some cool 3D stuff (Dirk)
Christmas Price Index: a contemporary economic analysis of the twelve days of Christmas (Dann from Jack)

NASA ROVER animation: This about blew my mind. Remember it's just animation but enjoy watching this little robot manuver about and do it's tasks. . .then remember it's something like 100 million miles away and NASA says it's actually doing this stuff. Then goto NASA HOME page and follow the links for the photos you might see in a couple of days on TV. (Jack)

Rongevaer's Atlantic Crossing: Website documenting Larry's sailing trip from Bayfield WI to Bergen Norway in 2000. (Larry)

Friends and Family

Ostrich Logic: artist and friend Lou Ferreri's website (Dann)
Dark Lake: web home of friend and poet Kathryn Kysar
Roberto Osti: another artist friend

Cool "toys"

Windjet: high speed wind powered crafts (Dirk)
